Blount County Alabama
You will find this bridge five miles north of Oneonta, Alabama on Highway 75. Calvert Prong of the Warrior River carved this beautiful setting surrounding Horton Mill Bridge. The bridge provided a much-shortened access to the market place for TM. Horton Lumber Mill thus was named “Horton Mill Bridge”.
Mr. Zelma Tidwell who built other covered bridges in Blount County built Horton Mill Bridge between 1934 and 1935. Talmedge Horton, a descendant of the family that founded the lumber mill for which the bridge is named, helped construct the bridge. His records state that it took fifteen men working from sunup to sundown a year and a half to complete this bridge.
The bridge stands 70 feet above Calvert Prong and is the highest covered bridge over water in America. You will find a single rock holds the large concrete and stone piling supporting the bridge near the center. This is a “Town” type truss bridge, 220 feet long, 14 feet wide and 10 1/2 feet high. The bridge floor and truss system are wood. This bridge is used even today for automobile traffic even today. It is a remarkable example of workmanship worth your visit.
